Distractions

This morning I got up at 6:00 a.m., got a cup of coffee and went directly to the computer, where I planned to write a short chapter for an e-book about vacationing in Italy.  The screen opened to the Internet sites that I had left last night before leaving to teach my management class.  One of those was magazines.com, where I had intended, and now began to complete, a subscription request for Money magazine and New Yorker.  While doing so I clicked on the New Yorker Web site and noticed an article entitled, “How Paul Krugman found politics.” I clicked on it and began reading.  He was being interviewed at his condo in St. Croix.  Hmm.  I googled St. Croix and “surfed” there for a while.  By now, 35 minutes had passed and I had not written one word about Italy.

So my thought for day is about distractions.  Distractions can be time-wasting or they can be useful.  How can you and your organization use distractions in a positive way? And how can your customers’ and clients’ distractions be useful to you?

Now back to that Italy book.
